Railways in Retrospect
LNER In Transition by Michael Blakemore
The railways seem always to
have been in transition. They have only lately come through the transition from public to private ownership, but 55 years ago there was the major upheaval when they were taken into State control as British Railways. As in all
transitions the railways underwent great visual change over a period of several years as the new styles and practices of British Railways gradually eliminated old company identities. Using many previously unpublished
photographs, LNER in Transition looks at the transformation of the London & North Eastern Railway into BR over the years between 1947 and 1953 during which there was the last chance to see
familiar old liveries, the first sightings of new locomotives commissioned in the final days of the old company and the dawning realisation that a new nationalised era was indeed beginning.
